An Intro to How-To

A place to develop all things Stroke Improvement in Our-selves, Helping Others and Institutions. The SIG

This post is step 1 of 5 in a curated path designed to make on-boarding smooth for you. (Read sequentially and all concepts are explained on 1st encounter).

The remainder of this post is a little philosophy and an introduction to enough of the forum’s concepts (eg “Tags”) and what buttons to press to promote your independent exploration of what is here 🙂. - A shallow guide to give initial orientation.

If you need more depth and detailed help navigating and or (&|) formatting refer to steps 2 through 5 above or Click Here –>How-To(Forum) for all how-tos. Ignore 1st time through.
If you haven’t already read The Welcome Post we recommend that as more relevant at the start. It’s about your life now! This one is mostly about techie stuff.

Notice:

When you see “Details” or “Some Title Text”

The indicates that there is more explanation that can be revealed by Clicking | Tapping the text starting with “Details” or “The Title Text”.

Clicking|Tapping on “Title/ Details” again will re-collapse it.

If the expandable text is in a bulleted or numbered list clicking the bullet icon does not have any effect! But the rest of the line will take the Click | Tap event

IMPORTANT: The forum display (User Interface) is adaptive to your device's size and type. (Click | Tap to expand)

One set of display layouts are used for larger screens - Generally Desktop/ Laptop and Tablets and another layout is used for narrower screens; generally mobile phones.
Also…
A mobile device’s browser can be set to request either Desktop Site or Mobile Site View (Mode)

Generally a Mobile device in mobile-site-mode and desktops with a narrow window width (<960px?) will use the Narrow Layout. A Mobile in Desktop Site(!) mode or a wide enough desktop window will all use the other layout.

The differences to the workflow between a Wide-Screen View with a pointing device (normally on a Desktop | Laptop) or Narrow-Screen View with a touch screen (normally on a Mobile device) are mostly but not entirely cosmetic
For example:

The Wide-Screen View mode places the Composer’s (Post Creator & Editor See Posting) Window-pane at the bottom of the forum’s window
The Narrow-Screen View mode places the Composer window-pane at the top of the forum’s window
(To allow space for the on-screen keyboard at the bottom)
Wide-Screen Layout with a pointing device has a pop-out menu on the left side triggered by a mouse-over event
Dotted underlines like this have Tool-Tip text shown on mouse hover. The same with any link or image with the Title attribute in use.

Navigating Through The Forum’s Content

There are What, Where and How elements to ‘navigation’
1) What = choosing your path through the contributions - Some suggestions in the remainder of this post
2) How and Where = the content of steps 2 through 5.

A **very** condensed Quick Starter is:

The forum has three levels

You’re currently viewing the third level; A thread.

Level 1: The Top- (or Home- or Landing-) Page is either Tags (Categories) or “All discussions” or User directory or “Polls” or… as selected from the Top-Page menu
You descend the hierarchy by Clicking | Tapping menu-entries or icons or headings …

The second level is the Threads (Conversations) in a Category or the Bios in the User Directory or Settings in your Profile etc

The third level are individual threads/ conversations which contain a notional fourth level; the individual posts contributed by members.
No Screen-Shot because your looking at a thread now! 🙂

Ascend the hierarchy by using the Forum’s “” Up a level button Top Left of the screen or
You can take the reverse journey through pages you have visited using either your device’s or the browser’s “” back button.
“” and are sometimes equivalent but not often

You can ignore Step:2 Concepts and Vocabulary for now and visit it after finishing reading this post - Which you choose to do 1st may be determined by your understanding 🙂 For example:
Is the hierarchy of Posts in one and only one Thread in one or more Categories (or “Tags”) already clear?
Is the difference between “” and the browser’s “” clear - “” goes UP one level (from Posts in Thread to Threads in Category to Forum Top Level Page) and goes repeatedly BACK to previously visited pages where-ever it was in the hierarchy; or on/off the forum.

To contribute you have to Sign-Up and Sign-In. Step 3: Sign-Up :
Reading (most) content is open to everyone

Just refresh the page (ctrl-f5? Or Pull-down the page).
If that doesn’t work then log-out and back in
At a guess the ‘lease’ on the sign-in cookie’s credentials is timing out after a few hours but it could be a bug 🙂

What Categories Exist? and Do We Need Others?

To see all Categories go to the forum’s top level page by using two Taps|Clicks on “” Up Top Left from within a Thread/ Conversation then select “Tags”.

At the time of writing…

(early in the community site’s history) … the Categories are:

The coloured blocks in the screens shot above shows the Primary Categories into which Threads and their constituent Posts are organized by Tagging. The Tags/Categories start:Welcome, Back-Stories, Chat & Annoucements, …,Rehab & Exercises ,… thenHow-To(Forum) , …Carers etc…. (When you see tags as coloured buttons like here they are working links).
Each Tag has a description of what it categorizes - shown at the top of the window when you are on a tag’s list of included threads.
Within Primary Categories may optionally be sub-topics such CPSP,Emotions etc (withinImpacts). Then usable on any thread are Universal Tags (Shown at the end of both ScreenShorts) such asResources,How-To(Stroke),setupAdmin etc.
(these are also buttons so functioning links to a list of threads categorized by the Tag)
Clicking (Tapping) on any of these causes your browser to list Threads tagged to the topic independently of any other Tags the Threads belong to.
When Signed-In 3: Sign-Up you can add Posts to Threads and Threads to Tags 4: Posting .

The existing Tags (are intended to) provide categories for discussion of the full scope of SIG’s interests including managing the community and Raising awareness of SIG

If you’ve suggestions for other topics after using the ones that exist or would like to contribute to and or (&|) moderate then sign-up and create a thread tagged asImprovement Ideas andForum orForum Niggles with the potential opportunity described 🙂

One Tag is currently Restricted (Click|Tap to expand)

ThesetupAdmin tag’s threads shouldn’t (!) be readable - Hopefully for obvious reasons to anybody but Group: @setupUsers
It illustrates a capability we may wish to exploit for other Closed / Private group discussions. Groups (See 2:Concepts can be created whose members are able to access some threads (and others list what exists or unable to see them at all. (Posts can be contributed anonymously and redacted for a variety of unauthorised users)

Simon I had a bit of trouble logging in as a member user, its probably just me, but I did get there eventually I had to adjust my user name slightly when I first typed in my first name and last name with a space between the 2 I couldn’t progress and had a message in red saying something like,”your username can only contain letters, numbers and dashes.” So I got rid of my capital letters and switched the space for a dash and then I was able to login. Thanks for all the work that has been put into this forum am sure that it is going to be a great resource for stroke survivors. Kindest regards Carol

Cazza Hi Carol, glad you finally made in. I think Simon has made a post on how to use this site so have a rummage round and you’ll find it, but it does have some similarity to the SA forum if that helps.

I have but it is currently far from finished AND I definitely need this sort of lived experience to guide inclusion of pitfalls that others will want to avoid so thank you @Cazza 🙂

@EmeraldEyes I’ll also attempt to make the relevant posts wikis I don’t know how much of the setup I’ve done for that so far but I think it is possible and I will let everyone know if / when 🙂
