Can tinnitus be caused by a stroke ?

This can make hearing much more difficult, especially if the sound is a similar frequency to the tinnitus whistle in your ears. Ladies voices, cooker alarms may be difficult to hear clearly.

Nige Nice to read so much content from you, Nigel, and nice to feel your presence, once more. Tinnitus is indeed a strange beast ! I had it long before my stroke. After my stroke it reduced to 25% of the intensity. In fact, I use it as an indicator of my blood pressure (high blood pressure = more blood flow through ears = more tinnitus). So much so, that these days it has become a low priority problem. A lot of medication has on its long list of side effects (usually the last one) ; tinnitus. Also, I did embark on a curative program for it years ago with turmeric.

Yeah I have various sorts of tinnitus.

Before the stroke I was developing tinnitus that was a low frequency rumble with a characteristics like my heartbeat in my ears.

I’ve only had that very very rarely since the stroke but I have high pitch whistle now.
It’s mostly quiet & I think always in the background (I can ignore it sometimes) - It definitely intensifies at some times and it switches on like a light switch.

It’s not hugely bothersome so like Roland said not been a priority for me

I’ve had it virtually all my life. I kind of hoped there might be some change for the better in it as I recovered. Alas it remain the same as it always has and I will never know the sound of silence 😞

@Simon, mine is like yours. And hearing my heartbeat and my ears with something that started just before the strokes, went away and then returned with my new heart valve. I usually only hear it when I lay down to sleep at night. The tinnitus however has gone to that high pitch and is annoying if I think about it but otherwise if I’m busy I don’t notice it. Of course now we’re talking about it so it’s bugging me!

DeAnn Unlike many here I don’t suffer from tinnitus. However the Czech composer Smetana did, a very high E, and he featured it in his string quartet in E minor. But like Pando, I too cannot play the violin at present, and the silence after many decades of music-making is not borne at all well. It is now about the only thing which causes emotion. One day, hopefully, Pando and our wives (cellist and violist!) and I can play bits of the Smetana in some sort of tribute, but the right arms have to work properly first.

The GRASP programme was part of my early recovery, but I don’t do it now. Perhaps the propriceptive part needs to be resurrected at least. Many thanks for this.

To be honest I am also battling against two papers in memoriam of a researcher who died aged in his 80s. 20 mins at a time at the keyboard plus recovery exercises plus encoding and the running of a difficult numerical algorithm plus a few memory issues don’t make happy bedfellows! But now got the BP in the low 130s.

What’s your papers and algorithm?

Setting this site up is also taking a lot of time and I have a steering committee to co-chair tomorrow for the introduction of hybrid digital physical rehabilitation hubs. An initiative that I am still trying to get the stroke association to discuss. Due to their total, let’s say that again TOTAL lack of willingness to engage and my propensity to point out there inaccurate (lying?, certainly feet dragging) statements of prejudices they threw me out of the forum where I had spent 2 years being the leading contributor - thousands of hours of effort discarded without any opportunity to be saved which would have taken one simple command 🙁

It’s been similar to having another stroke really. The adjustment process originally followed the shock anger resistance acceptance helping profile of grief. This time the same profile with different emphases and nuances.

I’ve come back to GRASP two or three times at different stages of my post-stroke journey. Each time it has contributed in different ways because my starting baseline was different.

When I put the stuff up I’ll try and explain but in the meantime I would recommend any activity of daily living that is affected beside directed will be doing you good 🙂

Andrew I know it can be exhausting juggling numerous tasks but don’t forget to rest to recharge the brain.
Multitasking is tricky for the stroke brain, a necessary evil to retrain the brain 😵 the more you do it the easier it will get in the long run so you don’t shy away from it 🙂

@Simon I bet you wouldn’t have considered starting you own stroke forum 4 years ago, now look how far you have come😄

Fundamental maths really. Convection in an inclined porous box. When the layer is infinite in length a linear instabilty analysis shows that the layer is stable after about 31 degrees from the horizontal. However, a finite length box is unstable to a much higher inclination if nonlinearities are allowed. No-one knows about the infinite box, but that is more complicated - that said I have a good idea of roughly how it goes. I am computing the maximum inclination for instability as a function of the Rayleigh number and aspect ratio of the box. Turns out to be more complicated than I first thought. I guess that someone has to do it, for its been the elephant in the room for decades. Use of a spectral scheme plus Newton-Raphson means quartic sums, but that is detail. You did ask! And I enjoy this more than planting flowers or do-it-yourself! Weird, I know….

The Stroke Assocation website immediately asks for cash. Oops, wrong emphasis. Yes, cash is important but secondary for us. Ideas, things to try are more important.

There are so many different things I do therapy-wise that I have to keep a record of it, otherwise things get missed.

Keep the blood pressure low. That has to be a higher priority than any Stroke Association. See the situation, assess it coolly and rationally, then act. Dispassionately. There are so many stresses anyway that we can do without self-generated ones!

I also appreciate that for me the puzzle can be as much restfull in ways that I need as a dark and quiet room.

There’s quite a bit of the language in your reply that I do not have experience or context to parse into meaning. I suspect I could pick you up on the use of the word complicated and postulate you really meant complex?
I would distinguish the two by example to say that determination of the values to go into the railway timetable is complicated (can be modelled thus predicted but may take inordinate amounts of work) and the experience of a 5-year-old’s birthday party or indeed the moderation of a forum is complex (is not possible to model given the current levels of understanding)

The topic of the stroke association’s persona is one for another post. I have written to the chair of the trustees about it without using those words. His name is Stephen King and his email is chair@stroke.org.uk

Blood pressure is of course a topic of importance 🙂 Diet, medication and mental well-being are all contributors. I believe that statins are also a component of the complex (sic) equation not necessarily for their (disputed) cholesterol impacting e/(a)ffects but for other less clear arterial factors - a topic on the 'to be read up on list but not anywhere near the top of the what next list

And I think peripherally not directly, that’s enough forum activity for now as I have some exercises to do where I need to waive my arms and legs around in various arcane ways in the hope that that will build towards the point where autonomic and subconscious can make them do what I consciously desire 🙂

Strangely 4 years ago I had naively assumed that the organisations that hold their begging bowl out on the basis that they support us and advocate for us would already be doing the sort of thing that I thought was needed.

3.9 years ago I naively thought that they would be open to a constructive conversation about how they could be doing the stuff that they hadn’t seen the relevance of

3.8 years ago I naively thought that the management would be accessible and would be eager to embrace what the frontline wasn’t

And here we are all that time later and they have managed to be consistent all the time through and I have just finished the steering committee meeting with the NHS and several charities including them where the director for Scotland was present (but didn’t say hello) and local universities school of therapies and theres a real prospect of making something really valuable happened.

Fortunately I get up naturally at least an hour before my wife does - an old habit that seems to have continued despite my new depth of sleep - and do my BP and some of the exercises before breakfast.

I do mean complicated! There is a subtle difference between the two. Although complex numbers aren’t complicatd, at least not to me, there is a difference between complex (an assemblage of many different things such as buildings or even complex numbers, and this goes for people with “complexes” where they can’t cope well with the many things that are happening) and complicated (difficult, tricky). Some things are both and this makes it difficult! Perhaps I have been wrong all these years.

Fortunately cholesterol levels are fine and therefore statins have not been foisted on me, just diuretics and anti-hypertensives. They seem to work, at least assisted by turmeric, ginger and beetroot powder at taken both ends of the day. Statins have had quite a bad press and therefore I prefer to avoid them. The technical term is iatrogenic.

When the stroke happened I needed a shunt which was placed at the top of the forehead because I was hydrocephalic. The first I actually knew that I looked like an Ood (a Dr Who reference!) was from the doctor who was just about to remove it! Nothing hurt at all. I had shaved at the bed using a donated electric razor that was given to me for the purpose, and therefore I hadn’t even used a mirror. Everyone had ganged up not to say! No problems…. Although the resulting dent in the forehead was very prominent, the hole in the bone has almost repaired now. That said, I can still see it when light is reflected in certain ways.

Nothing to do with tinnitus, I’m afraid. Apologies.

I think we’ve discovered a pair of terms with disciplines specific meanings then that are not identical.

In my field which is the management of change and governance complicated is used to describe intricate with many deterministic components.

Complex is used to describe emergent behaviours. Often where a few simple interactions give rise to behaviours that are stochastic. Complex in my field gives rise to wicked problems. (The Wikipedia page used to be better: ( The writings of Jeff Conklin on the topic are better)
More to say but the wife just called me to order to head off to the farmers market…
