This guy will tell you all you need to know about balance. I particularly like these because balancing gets all your muscles working at once just to keep you upright, from your belly (abdominal muscles) to your toes
The beauty about balancing is you can do it anywhere. While you are queuing at the supermarket tills you can just stand one foot on top of the other or against the opposite ankle and just stand, the swap round and you’ve got your trolley for support. This is a very useful exercise that you take anywhere and everywhere, any time day or night! While standing at the cooker, washing up, waiting for the bus, etc. etc.
If you’re really unsteady on your legs, need to use a stick walking, then maybe the best place to start is standing still.
Stand up straight, feet together with your eyes closed and just concentrate on standing still. You can do this for 5 minutes to half an hour if you want, put some music on too.
The longer you stand like this the more aware you are going to become of the muscle movements in your legs/feet.
Keeping your eyes closed is forcing your brain to focus solely on keeping your muscles working to remain upright.
And as you stand there you will notice things like your abdominals muscles start to tense up, your waist will clench to tighten up and keep you steady as a rock. Your leg muscles will be constantly twitching and flexing, reminding and retraining your brain, to what they are, where they are and what they’re to be doing.
I don’t know if I spooked my hubby earlier because I did this for 15mins after I came home from my strength & balance class. He said he thought I’d gone sleep standing up I was so perfectly still 🤣 And yet, all the while my muscles were working ten to the dozen to keep me upright 😄
It takes time to progress, it’s a daily exercise but it’s the easiest to do while waiting for anything, waiting for the bus to come, the kettle to boil, whilst standing in a que. All you need is to get into the habit 😉
